Time for a break

03/05/2011 Leave a comment

Literally….

Over the past 8 weeks, I ran 10 races. I had fun, set some PRs, all that good stuff…..but now this has happened

(I apologize for the poor quality of my photo and my foot. I did not see the swelling in my foot until I looked at this picture…not cool!)

So while all of these were fun:

6 March 2011 – Vamos 5K – Time: 37:07; Mile: 11:57

13 March 2011 – St. Patrick’s Day 8K -Time 58:02; Mile – 11:41; 5K Split: 36:04

20 March 2011 – Shamrock 1/2 Marathon – Time – 2:39:05; Mile – 12:14; 5 Mile Split – 58:14

1 April 2011 – Crystal City 5K #1 – Time – 34:29; Mile – 11:07

3 April 2011 – Cherry Blossom Ten Miler – Time – 2:02:51; Mile – 12:18

8 April 2011 – Crystal City 5K #2 – Time – 34:18; Mile – 11:03

15 April 2011 – Crystal City 5K #3 – Time – 35:31; Mile – 11:26

22 April 2011 – Crystal City 5k #4 – Time – 34:00; Mile – 10:57

29 April 2011 – Crystal City 5K #5 – Time – 34:33; Mile – 11:08

1 May 2011 – Race for Hope 5K – Time – 34:50; Mile – 11:13

The stress fracture is not. Luckily, the doc says it is not bad and he claims I can still run and exercise. I have decided to take at least week off the running and stick to yoga and strength (Nike training Club and the Shred) for a while. I am getting some fancy orthotics made for my running shoes, so hopefully those will prevent this from happening in the future.

Anyone have any other ideas on combatting future fractures? What kind of exercise should I do right now?

PS – my PRs are in bold…not bad!

Five Days to go

My inner-yogi is trying to get out

20/04/2011 Leave a comment

Last night I went back to Stroga to start my month I purchased through one of those daily deal sites (I cannot keep them all straight anymore). It was my first time to yoga since January and my first time a non-Bikram class since sometime in the fall.

I have always said that I do not like regular yoga. I have way too much trouble shutting down my brain and just going with the flow (ha…I am so punny). But last night, I really tried and I think I did a good job. I really loved the class (Vinyasa Flow) and I look forward to going again this weekend. I think it helped me let go of some of the anger I have in me right now. There were a few times when I actually thought I may cry (but not in a scary cry face way). I have read about this happening to people in yoga before, where you just get so close to your emotions and let it all out), but I never bought into it. Maybe it is true. Guess I will find out as the month progresses

Tomorrow night is “warm” Vinyasa. The room will be 90 degrees. While that is nothing compared to Bikram, it is still hot. I think I should take two water bottles and a couple extra towels!

Mid-month check-in

18/04/2011 Leave a comment

I have been pretty busy and have a lot of things going on in my life right now, so the blog has taken a back seat. I hope to get back on it more because writing makes me feel better, but I also don’t know how much I want to share the Internet….

But I did want to check in on my monthly goals so I can figure out what I need to do over the next 13 days! I have some successes and some failures, but at least I have made some progress!

Do food trucks count as restaurants????

07/04/2011 Leave a comment

Because if they do, I am knocking off 2-4 more new DC restaurants this Saturday!

Food Truck Heaven

J and I are headed to the DC United-LA Galaxy game this Saturday night (and it is not just to look at David Beckham!) and there will be FIVE food trucks there. Sadly, one is not vegetarian friendly at all (but BBQ Bandidos does sound delish) and I am not certain Sang on Wheels has anything for me either…but theose other three…GAME ON!!!!

good start to the month

I ran two races this weekend and set two PRs.

Friday night, I ran the Crystal City 5K in 34:29, at an 11:06 pace. That is 2:38 faster than my last 5K, just 4 weeks ago!

Sunday was the Cherry Blossom 10-Miler. I finished at 2:02:51, with a 12:18 pace. It is a PR for me, but I am still disappointed. I really wanted to go sub-2:00…I suppose that will have to wait until the Army 10-Miler.

More details and pictures of both later!

April Goals…it’s going to be a busy month!

It is a new month and time to set some new goals. I feel like I have been focusing on my running way too much, and while I intend to keep that a big part of my life, that is not all this blog is about. Whirlwind weekend

26/03/2011 Leave a comment

J and I are on New England for the weekend. We took the 3:15 AM train to providers and we are currently in the car on the way to Foxboro, where we are staying. Tomorrow is his sister’s baby shower. So excite to see the girls. Since they live in England (the real one, not the new one), we don’t see them very often. I think the last time we saw them was thanksgiving 2009!!! Hopefully we will be able to make a trip across the pond to meet the new baby this fall.

Other possible (hopeful) highlights this weekend: running in a new place, taking advantage of the heated indoor pool, and going to see DC United play this afternoon. The hotel is right across the street from the stadium….but by sure we can sneak away from family time for that long. We brought our execs just in case though!

Ok, time for a quick backseat nap

Shamrock Half Marathon

22/03/2011 Leave a comment

I did it! I finished my first half marathon and I am ready to do it again!

The morning started out cold. I am pretty sure the winds were around 30 MPH as we walked over to the starting line. I started out like this:

But I removed my two jackets before jumping into my corral:

(yes those are St. Patrick Day socks turned arm warmers)

I made a very last minute playlist and it was just what I needed to get me going. One of the first songs I heard was Citizen Cope’s “Sun’s Gonna Rise.” Quite fitting as the sun was rising right about then. There was great energy on the course and lots of people cheering us on…and setting up beer stations for later (I did not partake in that because I am pretty sure I would have been sick).

I hit mile five at the same pace I ran the 8K last week. I did the math in my head and I figured I could do this in 2:40. (Math got me through a lot of this race; kept my mind off the pain). The first ten miles weren’t bad. I only walked through the hydration stations and stopped once to tie my shoe. But after that….whole different story. Every step I took after mile 10 was a personal distance record. I could feel my lack of training smacking me in the face. But I stuck to it.

I ran into my friend’s husband (she was running the full, he was just running for fun) around mile 12.5 or so. He jumped in with me for a few and snapped this lovely picture:

Amazing how you can fake happiness at this point! and then he caught this one on my final dash on the boardwalk:

J also got a great video, but I still don’t know how to add those! someday….

After the race, we watched for Meg and then I went to shower, change and eat. We headed back to see her finish. She set a new PR by six minutes! Go Meg!!!! And then we headed into the after party, sponsored by Yuengling

(note to self…wear sunscreen)

Sadly, this became this…..

You can’t take some people anywhere!!!!!

All in all, it was a great day. And I got some great SWAG. RUnner’s World has voted it one of the best for its giveaways. I got a nice technical shirt, a bag, the finisher’s t-shirt you see above, my medal and a hat (and all the Yuengling you can drink!)

I am looking into running the Rock and Roll Half in VA Beach over Labor Day weekend. I hear it is a good time, just need to find an affordable hotel.

I have the bug

22/03/2011 Leave a comment

The running bug…details to follow on my half, but I am already contemplating my next one and I am seriously considering the flying pig full…clearly I was drugged this weekend. Detail and pics to follow tomorrow, but I will leave you with this

20110322-120332.jpg

My official time was 2:39:05. I was just hoping to finish under 3 hours, so I call this a huge win!
